Sophia Al Maria, with Lydia Ourahmane, presents ‘The Pits,’ a new participatory installation at G31 in Somerset House, London, UK, created during their residency at Somerset House Studios.
Engaging in dialogue with their outdoor commission ‘2125’ on Lancaster Place, ‘The Pits’ explores how social narratives in a postcolonial and late capitalist context can impact our emotional and physical well-being. The act of sitting and resting are seen as a gesture of quiet defiance and a way of reckoning with the weight of history in contemporary society.
For four months, Al-Maria and Ourahmane will transform Somerset House Studios’ project space into a black box that shifts and bends. Over the exhibition period the public are invited to dwell, rearrange and even book The Pits free of charge to host their own events; discussions, gatherings, performances, and readings.
