Works by Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian, Pouran Jinchi, and Hayv Kahraman are on view at ‘Wonders of Creation: Art, Science, and Innovation in the Islamic World’, a group exhibition at McMullen Museum of Art in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, curated by Ladan Akbarnia.
On view from 9 February until 1 June 2025.
‘Wonders of Creation: Art, Science, and Innovation in the Islamic World’ explores intersections of art and science in Islamic intellectual and visual culture from the ninth century to the present day. The exhibition employs the lens of “wonder” as defined by a celebrated thirteenth-century Islamic scholar Zakariyya al-Qazwini (d. 1283) in his cosmography, which describes wondrous qualities of the natural world and its inhabitants.
Pairing ancient art from the Islamic world with contemporary works by artists Monir Farmanfarmaian, Pouran Jinchi, Hayv Kahraman, Pantea Karimi, Issam Kourbaj, and Timo Nasseri, the exhibition introduces visitors to art, science, and innovation spanning twelve centuries.
The show is organized by the San Diego Museum of Art in collaboration with the McMullen Museum of Art.
