Lamya Gargash, 2008

Lamya Gargash’s latest series of work, Presence, is comprised of haunting photographs of the unwanted houses or structures in the UAE that have been semi-abandoned or face demolition. It documents the culture that developed after the oil boom nearly thirty years ago – and the young generation’s abandonment or estrangement from these spaces: cultural extinction, an inevitable byproduct of modernity. Published by PageOne on behalf of Works on Paper by The Third Line, this 150 page book includes an introduction by curator November Paynter and a conversation between Lamya Gargash and Fouad Elkhoury, celebrated Lebanese photographer and Arab Image Foundation co-founder. Presence was launched in Doha in November 2008 and in Dubai in March 2009. Published with the support of the Emirates Foundation.
